Ranging from the St. Lawrence River and the Tug Hill Plateau in the west, to Lake Champlain and Lake George in the east, the region of over six million acres contains the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River, the Adirondack Park. The spectacular Adirondack Park, and its associated networks of hiking, paddling, and winter recreation opportunities, is a park unlike any other. There is no entrance, and it is open all the time! The Adirondack Park is also home to over one hundred year round communities. These communities provide the services that enable visitors to enjoy everything that the park has to offer.
Within the Adirondack Region, but outside of the park, are the commercial centers including Plattsburgh, Malone, Canton, Potsdam, and Glens Falls. These areas offer a much different experience than the communities that lie within the park, yet they are located only a few miles from the park's amenities.
