Walk Softly, Carry a Big (Walking) Stick – Leave-No-Trace Vacations

Mar 17, 2009

ADIRONDACK REGION, N.Y. - It may be fashionable to be Green today, but in the Adirondack Park of Northern New York, the philosophy dates back more than 100 years. The park has been at the forefront of eco-conscious development and sustainability since 1892 when it was incorporated by New York state as a Forever Wild wilderness. It took center stage recently during a national climate conference held at the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks in Tupper Lake.

Close-to-home, affordable getaways are available for visitors to the six-million acre wilderness with nature-based adventures that help preserve the environment and, at the same time, help raise awareness for sustainability. From camping along quiet streams, kayaking in rushing rivers to navigating the best bicycle routes and trails - visitors will find some of the best opportunities in America for outdoor recreation in a superb natural setting.

Explore Adirondack alpine ecosystems; take an interpretive hike with naturalists focused on mountain habitats and birds, including the rare Bicknell's Thrush; and ramble along the Raquette River with a licensed guide.

Hike the beautiful 9.8 mile round trip trail to Camp Santanoni, a National Historic Landmark and one of the great treasures of the Adirondacks. This historic place is adjoined by the High Peaks Wilderness and Vanderwhacker Wild Forest Areas. Learn first-hand about conservation planning and restoration work underway at the Main Camp.

Meet American Mountain Men, enjoy a Woodsmen's Day Parade and reap the bounty of Adirondack Harvest's local farm fresh products. Play an active role in the preservation of the Adirondack High Peaks and carry a rock to the top of Wright Peak where it will help line the trails for future hikers.

The Forever Wild lands of the Adirondacks are an outdoor-lover's paradise and an Adirondack green getaway offers a wonderful opportunity to sample this extraordinary region. Adirondack Regional Tourism Council can provide information on planning a vacation. Call 800-487-6867 or log onto to VisitAdirondacks.com for a complete listing of restaurants, lodging and maps.
