ADIRONDACK REGION, NY - Snow conditions are prime for back-country adventures in the Adirondacks. With several feet of snow blanketing the region - the trails are in peak condition for cross-country skiers and snowshoers. When the snow flies, Adirondackers suit up and get out - here are some local favorites. These hot spots offer some of the best cross-country skiing in the Northeast, yet the trails are never crowded and offer something for every skill level.

Top 5 Back Country Ski and Snow Shoe Hot Spots in the Adirondack Region:
1. Point Au Roche - Breathtaking views of Lake Champlain, this eight mile trail just north of Plattsburgh is a hidden gem for skiers.
2. Camp Santanoni - this 10-mile round-trip ski along the gently sloping historic carriage road into Great Camp Santanoni will end at the massive Main Camp. Great trip for beginners and nature lovers.
3. Jack Rabbit Trail - this 35-mile loop connects Paul Smiths, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Keene. A scenic tour of Adirondack forest, frozen ponds and mountains - this trail loop has several entry points with great trails for beginner to expert cross-country skiers. Good mix of uphill and downhill.
4. Dewey Mountain - great for families, perfect for everyone! This ski and snowshoe center offers a warming lodge and rentals. Friday Night Ski Jam with food and live music great for get-togethers with friends and night skiing. Check out the New Land Trust in Saranac Lake for more than 20 trails on 287 acres.
5. Lapland Lake - is one of the Adirondacks' finest ski areas. Since 1978, it has been owned and operated by former U.S. Olympic skier Olavi Hirvonen. Ski through the pristine Adirondack forests and enjoy the cozy lodge at the end of your ski - keep a sharp eye out for white-tailed deer, otters, snowshoe rabbits and winter birds. Groomed and backcountry trails.
