LOWVILLE, N.Y. - Lewis County will be celebrating its bicentennial on Monday, July 4th at the Lewis County Fairgrounds beginning at 11:00 a.m. This free event is expected to attract visitors from across Lewis County as well as people from other areas, according to Charlotte Beagle, chair of the committee that organized the event. "We expect that the bluegrass bands, beard- growing contest, fiddlers, and food provided by Rosie's Hot Dog Stand will appeal to people throughout the entire region," she noted. The daylong event will appeal to a wide range of people. History buffs will be able to examine historical photos, documents and geographical information about the county. Music lovers will be encouraged to dance and sing along with the various bands that will be taking part in the festivities including the Lowville Village Band, Fiddling Friends and the Atkinson Family Bluegrass Band. Adults will be able to bring their children for a day of family fun with friends and neighbors. According to Ann Melious, executive director of the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council, the celebration has been planned for well over a year. "The Bicentennial Celebration Committee has been working very hard to plan this exciting celebration," she said. "They've compiled historical photos, developed a commemorative publication, and arranged a day of fun-filled activities for parents and children. The turnout should be fantastic." The Lewis County Bicentennial Committee has spent the past year compiling a 74-page book of Lewis County history and photographs that will be available for $5.00. "Mitch Fidler and George Cataldo have spent many hours organizing the publication," said Beagle. "It will provide a unique memento of the day; something that people can keep for a long time."
