Whitewater raft this spring - enjoy mud season in NY

Mar 17, 2010

ADIRONDACK REGION, NY - Welcome in spring with a whitewater rafting expedition down a wild Adirondack river. Whitewater rafting deals and specials are available throughout the spring and summer from experienced Adirondack river outfitters.

Adirondack River Outfitters offers some of the best deals around throughout 2010. Raft the historic Hudson, the wild Sacandaga, Moose or Black rivers. 2010 marks the 30th Anniversary of ARO Outfitters and to celebrate; whitewater rafters can pay just $30 per person to raft on the 30th of each month in 2010 starting in April.

Hudson River Rafting Company, based out of North Creek, offers trips similar to ARO - with great group and seasonally appropriate river expeditions. Pitch your tent at their Hudson River Base Camp and enjoy an after-rafting barbecue.

Have canoe, will whitewater. Where "free" is the currency and the reward!

If you've got some paddling skills, there are plenty of places to race the rapids on your own. The Schroon River near Riverbank, about 15 minutes north of Lake George, is one such place. These rapids stay pretty steady all spring - between a Class II and Class III - and are easy to access. Put in on route 8 in the Town of Horicon. The entire trip is about seven miles to where you will take out in Riverbank on the East Schroon River Road.

Oswegatchie River - From Newton Falls to Hailesboro the river drops more than 970 feet. There are scenic sections, but some areas are difficult to access. There are numerous Class II - VI rapids and impassable ledges and dams. Water levels may fluctuate due to dam releases.

Middle Branch Oswegatchie River - This spectacular branch of the Oswegatchie plunges over waterfalls and through a rocky gorge. A drop of 90 feet in the first two miles gets the adrenalin going with an exciting mix of waterfalls and Class III rapids. Scouting is necessary to determine possible runs or carries around impassable sections, such as the narrow Sluice Falls. The second half of this 12-mile run is a calm Class I flatwater that winds through marsh and woodland.
