New York state has more ski resorts (50+) than any other state in the United States; many of which are smaller, family-oriented ski centers that make learning to ski safe, easy and comfortable.
For those who grew up in the region, these smaller centers are where many learned how to ski. To this day, many people in the region prefer to ski at their local ski center.
Skiing in the Adirondacks has always been about a pure experience on the mountain. The wild Adirondacks remain the mountains for skiers who are looking for a thrill without the hassle of travelling out west.
Many Olympic athletes have their roots in these smaller, local ski centers including John "Louie" Ehrnsbeck (McCauley Mtn.), Hank Kashiwa (McCauley Mtn.), and almost every American Olympic skier trains at Whiteface Mountain before heading to world-class events. These athletes include A.J. Kitt, Bill Johnson, Andrew Martin and Jennifer Collins as well as current world-class skiers Andrew Wiebrecht and Megan Papineau, who are from Lake Placid and Keene, respectively. Adirondack region ski centers include: Beartown Ski Center, Plattsburgh, Gore Mountain, North Creek, Shu-maker Mountain, Little Falls, Hickory Ski Center, Warrensburg, Snow Ridge, Turin, McCauley Mountain, Old Forge, Titus Mountain, Malone, Mt. Pisgah, Saranac Lake, St Mountain, Glens Falls, Oak Mountain, Speculator, Whiteface Mountain, Wilmington.
