When is the Adirondack Park open, how much is the entry fee, and do I need a permit?
The Adirondack Park is different than most parks. It never closes and there is no entry fee or entrance gates Just pick a destination at any of our friendly villages or campgrounds, and start enjoying your visit. To fish or hunt you do need a valid New York State fishing or hunting license.
What is the best time to visit?
Depending on your interest, you can always find the best time in the Adirondacks. Fresh maple syrup, whitewater rafting, and fishing highlight the spring. Water sports, hiking, bicycling, and family attractions are popular in the summer. Late summer and fall for farmer's markets, antiques and Adirondack furniture shopping, and of course, spectacular fall foliage. Winter brings a wonderland of snow and ice, so everything from skiing to ice fishing, winter carnivals and World Cup events are yours to enjoy. Hint: weekends are usually pretty busy any time of the year, so for the best deals, and for the quietest places, try to visit us mid-week.
Where can I go camping?
Our area offers hundreds of campgrounds, both privately owned, and New York State DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) facilities. The state campgrounds tend to be more primitive, while many private campgrounds provide more comfortable amenities. The popular sites book fast, so make your reservations early. All of the NYSDEC campgrounds require advance reservations.
Where can I go hiking?
With over 2,000 miles of marked hiking trails throughout the region, there is a trail for every ability. Remember that weekends are the busiest time, so if you want a quieter experience, mid-week is the time to go. The High Peaks region is the most popular, and has the steepest terrain. For a true wilderness adventure, try some of the areas in other parts of the Adirondack Region. Always use a detailed hiking guide and map, wear appropriate clothing, and bring a good supply of drinking water.
Do I need a car?
For the most part, a car is the best way to get around in the Adirondacks. Some communities offer limited public transportation, and there are several scenic railroads in the summer season. Rental cars are available in some of the larger towns and villages.
Where is the best place?
Lake George, Lake Placid, and the Old Forge area are our most popular destinations, and many first time visitors to the region begin their Adirondack adventure in one of those communities. There are over one hundred other villages situated throughout the Adirondack Region, and each one offers its own special Adirondack experience. A "best place" is what is best for you...a bustling town, a quiet village, or a secluded campground. National Geographic Traveler magazine listed the Adirondacks as one of the 50 best places in America to visit. We think you'll agree!
When is the best time for Foliage?
The brilliant fall colors start early in the highest elevations, usually around mid September, and culminate in the Champlain Valley and southern regions in mid October. The first 10 days of October usually provide peak color.
Where can I rent equipment such as a canoe or snowmobile?
Equipment rentals can be found in many of the larger villages. If you are new to a particular activity, you may wish to consider hiring the services of a licensed Adirondack guide. Guides typically furnish all of the necessary equipment, from fishing tackle to snowshoes.
