Cross country skiers, whether classic or skate, backcountry
or touring, will find opportunities duplicated nowhere else. Ski
touring centers offer rentals and lessons, and some have lights for
night skiing. Trails are marked and many groom regularly.
There are millions of acres of public land in the region with trails into
scenic and remote areas. These trails are not groomed but are often tracked
by early-bird enthusiasts. Some of the trails are easy paths on gently
rolling terrain while others require high levels of skill to traverse
steep hills dotted with trees.
The Jackrabbit Trail is 55 km from Keene to Paul Smiths. Most skiers pick
a portion of the trail for the day's outing by checking the
map published by the Adirondack Ski Touring Council; 518-523-1365.
Backcountry trails are an invitation for snowshoers, too. Snowshoes have
a very low learning curve (just strap them on!), so they are enjoying
renewed popularity as a way to exercise while exploring the winter landscape.
Several outfitters and sporting goods stores
rent snowshoes.
