West River is a scenic, seasonal-use road in the hamlet of Wells that follows along the West Branch of the Sacandaga River. Three miles of gentle terrain leads cross-country skiers and snowshoers from West River Road to swinging bridge on the Northville-Placid Trail. Of historic note, West River Road dead-ends at Whitehouse, once the location of a famous old hunting camp. All that remains of this camp today, is a beautiful, old stone chimney.
For road bikers, West River Road offers nine miles of various grades traveling from Algonquin Drive to Whitehouse on the Northville-Placid Trail. It shadows the West Branch of the Sacandaga River along the first three miles paved and then becomes a well-maintained, public dirt road.
