The Adirondack Rail Trail, slated to be completed in 2025, is a 34-mile multi-use, recreational trail that will be open year-round. Connecting the communities of Lake Placid, Ray Brook, Saranac Lake, Lake Clear, and Tupper Lake, the Rail Trail will give users a fun way to travel between their favorite towns and trails. In the winter months, the Rail Trail can be used for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking. The wide path allows for multiple user-groups to easily recreate together, with plenty of space to pass one-another safely. In spring, summer, and autumn, users will be able to hike, run, bike (including road bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes, recumbents, fat bikes and Class 1 e-bikes), and enjoy the unique Adirondack flora and fauna that exists all around the trail. Keep in mind that motorized vehicles, aside from snowmobiles and Class 1 e-bikes, are prohibited on the entire corridor in all seasons. Once completed, the trail will be wheelchair-friendly, with a grade of no more than 2% the entire way, including paved sections within the village of Saranac Lake. Multiple businesses located in and between the towns the trail connects ensure that users can find places to dine, rent equipment for any type of adventure, gas-up or repair equipment, and find information. There are also many places to park along the rail trail, allowing for access to any portion of the trail you’re particularly interested in exploring.
